Constipation, or obstructive defecation, is the difficulty of emptying one’s bowels, and can be related to a pelvic floor dysfunction. Traditionally, constipation is often times relate to an evacuation issue, where the bowel contents are too difficult too pass or are not occurring as frequently as they should. Bowel habits may differ from individual to individual, as some may pass stool multiple times per day, where others may only pass stool a few times per week. Multiple days in between stools, can result in the stool becoming more difficult to pass.

In order to pass a stool effectively, the pelvic floor muscles need to relax completely. Individuals who complain of constipation, often feel that they are straining to defecate, are not completely empty when they are finished and also will notice a difference in texture of the stools. The utilization of biofeedback tools, manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercise can improve the person’s ability to pass stool effectively.
