Nutrition Counseling Benefits (Medical Nutrition Therapy)

If you have Diabetes California state law (SB 64) requires your insurance company to reimburse for Medical Nutrition Therapy. If you need Medical Nutrition Therapy to manage high cholesterol or blood pressure, kidney disease, malnutrition, food allergies, eating disorders or gastro-intestinal disorders (IBS, Chrohn’s, Celiac disease) your medical insurance may reimburse for nutrition services.

The Dietitians at Bay Area Nutrition are providers for a number of insurance companies, including the Santa Clara County Individual Practice Association (SCCIPA), Aetna, HealthNet and Medicare. Most other insurance companies do not contract with dietitians, however, this does not mean they will not consider covering the service.

It is best to get a referral from your medical doctor and contact your insurance company to make sure that Medical Nutrition Therapy procedure codes (CPT) 97802 & 97803, are a covered benefit. We recommend you get any authorization in writing from your insurance company, otherwise you may be held responsible for the charges.

What Is an RD?

Registered dietitians, or RDs, are the food and nutrition experts, translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. The expertise, training and credentials that back a registered dietitian are vital for promoting positive lifestyle choices.

RDs have at least a Bachelor’s in Nutrition or related field, completed an internship, and passed the RD exam. In addition, RDs have to practice continuing education to remain current. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. In California there is no law requiring any education or training to be a nutritionist.

When you need food and nutrition information based on fact or need to know how a healthy diet improves health and fights disease—rely on qualified professionals in the field.

Registered dietitians draw on their experience to develop a personalized nutrition plan for individuals of all ages. They are able to separate facts from fads and translate nutritional science into information you can use. A registered dietitian can put you on the path to lowering weight, eating healthfully and reducing your risk of chronic disease.
